Have Art, will travel? Deciding if Art Fairs, Festivals, and Events make sense for you.
Ultimately it comes down to who your target audience is & the brand you are building for yourself.
So you must honestly sit down and review the facts as they stand:
Ask yourself what the ROI (return on investment) is? (Look at the spend overall & what you may gain)
Are you going to be paying hefty prices in order to attend?
Do you have to 'buy in' with others or is it just you?
How far away is it in relation to where your market is- remember at first you may be starting closer to home & expanding out. Or you may have a target market that is already far from home & is this event really tapping into them?
Getting your work in front of others in person is always a win, its how you can judge interest, see objections first hand and figure out how to overcome them.
The trick is ensuring its the right situation for your work. If you are a painter of large socially conscious works that speak to a more avent garde aesthetic we do not recommend entering into the local craft fair or 4H contest. If you are more traditionally academic in your style attending art basel might not be your best investment if you are footing the entire bill yourself.
We can assit you in these decisions and review your options to ensure you are getting the best ROI possible.
As always please be careful what you sign & who you work with as there are, unfortunately, many opportunists in our industry who will absolutely take advantage of a trusting soul. Always read the contract!
